Man who died three times this year wins huge Lucky for Life lottery prize

LANSING, MI — Jeff Heinig is Lucky for Life in more ways than one. The 59-year-old Harrison man claimed a huge lottery prize Monday after he won the Michigan Lottery’s Lucky for Life game worth $25,000 a year for the rest of his life.
It’s a life that was nearly taken away earlier this year.
“We’ve had a rough start to the year,” said Wendy Heinig, Jeff’s wife. “Earlier this year, Jeff had a massive heart attack and actually died three times before they saved his life. We’re all so fortunate to still have him with us, and winning this prize means we can enjoy doing some fun things together that we couldn’t have afforded before.”
Heinig matched all five white balls drawn for the drawing on Thursday night, Apr. 4 — 03-04-08-16-27 — to win the prize. He bought his winning ticket at the Harrison E-Z Mart, located at 701 North 1st St. in Harrison.
However, he nearly didn’t have a chance to claim the prize as he couldn’t find the ticket after realizing he’d won.
“I bought a Lucky For Life ticket last Wednesday and then checked it on the Lottery’s website Thursday morning,” Jeff said. “I didn’t match any of the numbers on the site, so I threw my ticket away.
“I was back on the website Friday, and the Lucky For Life numbers caught my eye. They were the numbers I always play, and that’s when it hit me that I had checked my ticket before the drawing had happened. I searched high and low for the ticket, but couldn’t find it anywhere until I went rifling through the trash.”
Thankfully he was able to find the ticket and call his wife with the good news.
“When I found it, my heart was pounding. I called my wife, who was out running errands, and she immediately thought something was wrong. I told her I had good news and she needed to get home as soon as she could,” Jeff said.
The couple claimed the prize Monday at Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing. They elected to receive the prize as a one-rime lump-sum payment of $390,000 instead of the annuity. Lucky for Life winners have the option of receiving $25,000 a year for at least 20 years or until they die, whichever is greater or to take the lump sum.
With the winnings, the couple plans on taking some vacations, paying some bills and sharing with family.
“I’m still searching for the words to describe winning, it’s so surreal,” Jeff said.
Heinig claimed his prize just three days after a lucky player in Michigan won $1 million playing the Mega Millions. Friday night’s winner marks the second time in as many weeks that a player from Michigan has won $1 million in the Mega Millions lottery.
On Mar. 22, Randy Richardson of Millington won $1 million after he bought a ticket while driving to find the cheapest gas in his area.
Those two winners aren’t the biggest recent winners however. In March, a Wayne County woman claimed a $4 million winning instant lottery ticket. The 28-year-old said she’d actually dreamed of winning a $4 million lottery prize just a few months before her big win.
The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot were Kevin and Stephanie Blake of Waterford who $21 million after splitting a $42 million jackpot on Oct. 13, 2017. Kevin picked the winning numbers by using a combination of family birthdays. After winning, the couple said they would not retire and would continue working.
And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Ypsilanti last year went unclaimed this month as well. The ticket was purchased at the CVS in Ypsilanti, but the winner never came forward to claim the prize. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
Speaking of coming forward, the winner of the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot from last year finally came forward this month as well. The winner’s identity was not revealed however as the player is from South Carolina, a state that allow winners to conceal their identity when claiming jackpot prizes.
If you’d like to be the next player from Michigan to win a huge lottery prize, take a look at these tips from lottery expert Richard Lustig. The author of “Learn How To Increase Your Chances Of Winning The Lottery” has won more than $1 million in Florida by winning top jackpot prizes in smaller games.
