First Powerball Millionaire – New Year’s Rockin’ Eve

The First Powerball Millionaire of the Year promotion is a special competition which culminates with one lucky player winning $1 million just after midnight on New Year’s Day. The drawing takes place live on air during the Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve broadcast from New York, with five finalists in the running to become an instant millionaire. The promotion held its first draw in the early minutes of 2020 and saw a winner from Maine awarded the life-changing prize.

2021 Winner

The 2021 Powerball First Millionaire of the Year was won by a DC player, Carlos Mabry, in this year’s edition of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest from Times Square.

The five finalists chosen from 26 participants were:

  • Sara Bosch from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania
  • Shawn Cantrell from Lincoln, Nebraska
  • Steven Everage from Seymour, Indiana
  • Laveral King Jr. from Winter Haven, Florida
  • Carlos Mabry from Washington, DC

Could you be the first Powerball Millionaire of 2022?

Mabry, who participated in the draw remotely from his home in Northwest DC, was nearly speechless as he watched the number come up and heard the amazing news from Powerball correspondent Jessie James Decker. He punched the air and reached out to hug his wife and two daughters.

“Tell me what is flowing through your body and blood right now,” host Ryan Seacrest said. Mabry repeated “Oh my,” before saying emotionally, “All glory to God!”

Mabry later said he plans to share his incredible prize with a number of good causes, including his church and a local food bank.

First Powerball Millionaire of the Year

The New Year’s Eve promotion is jointly organized by Powerball and Dick Clark Productions. Entry is a two-stage process, where semi-finalists are selected via local draws, before five finalists are chosen in a nationwide draw. One of the finalists will go on to win the $1 million grand prize.

The 2021 competition ran from August through October 2020. Each participating state lottery sets its own launch date and deadline for entries. Players need to submit non-winning Powerball tickets into a second chance draw; a semi-finalist from each jurisdiction is then selected and prizes for winners at this level are awarded.

The 26 participating lotteries in the 2021 promotion were: Arizona, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Vermont.

Next, the local semi-finalists are entered into a national draw conducted by the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs Powerball.

The five winners of that drawing are the finalists for the $1 million draw. They each receive an all-expenses paid trip to New York to attend the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve party in Times Square and will be in the running to become a millionaire.

Contact your state lottery for full details of how to enter the Powerball First Millionaire of the Year promotion, including the deadline for entries.

Powerball Rockin’ Eve

The five finalists of this year’s First Powerball Millionaire of the Year promotion will be able to take one guest on an all-expenses paid trip to New York to ring in the New Year in Times Square. The prize includes airfares, three nights in New York, transport, and $1,000 in spending money.

The holiday will conclude with the ultimate New Year’s Eve experience. The five finalists will attend the live broadcast of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and one of them will be selected as the winner of $1 million just after midnight.

Given the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, organizers have also provided an alternative prize for winners who would prefer to stay at home rather than attend the live event. They will receive the ultimate New Year’s Eve party package, which will include $12,500 in cash, a 70-inch TV, and a home theater system. They will still be in the running to win the $1 million prize, as they will be able to take part in the draw remotely.

Previous First Powerball Millionaire Promotions

The First Powerball Millionaire of the Year promotion ran for the first time in 2020 in 25 participating jurisdictions. More than 300 lucky players each won a luxury trip to New York and five of those were selected as the finalists who would be in with a chance of winning $1 million.

The package included luxury accommodation in Times Square for three nights from December 29 to January 1 for each winner and a guest, along with a welcome reception at the Edison Ballroom, two theater tickets, a holiday cruise on the Hudson and much more.

The winner of the $1 million prize and Powerball’s first millionaire of 2020 was Blaine Marston from Passadumkeag in Maine. He was revealed as the winner live on-air during Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve by country singer Jessie James Decker.

A delighted Marston described the feeling as ‘unreal’ and Powerball Product Group Chairman Gregg Mineo also saluted the event as an ‘exciting night in Powerball history.’ The $1 million prize was paid as a lump sum and there was not an option for an annuity.
