Powerball sept 26 2021

The Powerball jackpot will roll into 2021 with an estimated Grand Prize of $384 million ($295.4 million cash value) for the January 2 drawing. This is the highest the Powerball jackpot has been since January 2020 when a $396.9 million jackpot was won in Florida.

The Powerball jackpot was last hit in New York in the September 16 drawing. Since then, there have been 30 drawings in a row without a Grand Prize winner. Saturday’s drawing will be the 31st draw in the jackpot run.

While there were no $1 million or $2 million winners in the December 30 drawing, more than 1.1 million tickets won prizes ranging from $4 to $100,000. The $100,000-winning tickets were sold in Arkansas and Pennsylvania. During the current jackpot run, there have been more than 18.1 million winning tickets across all prize tiers, including 19 tickets that have won $1 million and nine tickets that have won $2 million.

2020 produced seven Powerball jackpot-winning tickets:

Jan. 29, 2020 – $396.9 million – Florida

Feb. 12, 2020 – $70 million – Michigan

April 8, 2020 – $190 million – New Jersey

June 3, 2020 – $136.4 million – West Virginia

Claiming, Safeguarding Winnings

So, what should you do if you are lucky enough to claim the Powerball jackpot? Many lottery winners hire an attorney, financial planner or both, since most people don’t exactly know what to do when they suddenly come into so much money. Some even bring their lawyer with them to claim their prize. The lottery does not offer any counseling services or financial advice for winners.

You have two choices when you claim your prize: the full value paid in 30 installments over 29 years, or a one-time lump sum that is smaller than the actual total. Then there are the taxes. The federal tax on lottery winnings is 25 percent. Then, any extra income taxes like state or city would apply.

Financial experts say that if you can get more than a 3 or 4 percent return on an investment, the lump sum is actually the best way to go in the long-term.
