CONNECTICUT — One winning $730 million Powerball ticket was sold in Maryland for the Jan. 20 drawing but there were some significant consolation prizes sold in Connecticut.

One Connecticut resident won $150,000 and three others took home $50,000, according to the Connecticut Lottery. All told, there were 60,169 “winning” tickets sold in the state, which simply means people won between $4 and a maximum of $150,000.

The winning Powerball numbers for Wednesday, Jan. 20, are: 40, 53, 60, 68, 69 and the Powerball of 22.

One ticket sold in Connecticut, valued at $150,000, matched four numbers, the Powerball and the Powerplay which was 3. Three others tickets sold matched four numbers and the Powerball.

The Powerball lottery jackpot had ballooned to more than three-quarters of a billion dollars — $730 million — for the player who had the winning ticket. The one-time cash payout for last night’s Powerball drawing was $546 million, lottery officials said. Since there was a winner, the jackpot is now back to $20 million for Jan. 23.

But don’t despair there is still a chance to win nearly $1 billion on Friday, Jan. 22 as the Mega Millions jackpot is now at $970 million, which has an estimated $716.3 million cash value.

The winning Powerball numbers are drawn every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern time, with Powerball results usually posted within 5 minutes. Ticket sales end at least one hour before the drawing in most states.

The largest Powerball jackpot in history was $1.586 billion, which was split by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee in January 2016.

To win the Powerball jackpot, a player must match all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball number. The odds of picking the correct Powerball grand prize numbers are one in 292,201,338, which doesn’t change even if more players buy tickets when the jackpot is enormous.
You have a better chance of winning the Powerball jackpot if you let the computer select your numbers, according to lottery officials. About 75 percent of winning tickets over the years had numbers picked by a computer.
